I spent this week looking for cheap auto insurance in an effort to reduce my monthly expenses. I never realized that there were so many places on the web where you can have your insurance quoted without having to wait and have an agent call you. I am finding this really handy, because it takes a lot less time out of my day to compare quotes that it used to.
I am also finding that the quotes I’ve received have a very broad range. Even when comparing virtually the same coverage, the differences in pricing can vary by as much as three hundred dollars for a six month policy.
Apparently, the latest trend in cheap auto insurance comes in the form of a device that monitors how and where you drive over the course of a few weeks. The data from the device is electronically gathered, and when sent to the insurer, they use the data to determine how much you will pay. Theoretically, the better I drive, the less I pay.
This makes more sense to me than rates based on a single event like a car-deer accident and much more sense than using my credit report as a basis. An accident can happen to anyone. And I don’t drive my wallet. So I am thinking about giving this a try, but I am not quite certain yet. I find myself wondering if the loss of privacy is worth a discount. I am interested to hear what others are thinking about this new technology.
