Should Smokeless Cigarettes Be Legal?
Everyone has heard of smokeless cigarettes by now. They’re also know as electric cigarettes. Basically they are a way for smokers to get a nic fix and the feel of a cigarette without actually smoking burning tobacco. They’re little cigarette sized plastic tubes that let you inhale a mist with nicotine in it. They’re better than nicotine patches because you can still go out on a smoke break and feel “normal.”
But some people are raising health questions about electric cigarettes. Some people ask whether the vapor that is inhaled is really all that safe. After all it still contains nicotine and it is still a foreign element in the lungs. Also many people are worried that e-cigarettes will appeal to children. Let me address the issues.
Even though smokeless cigarettes do have nicotine in them, they do not have the tar or other thousands of irritants that are contained in the smoke of any burning substance. People breathe in moist vapors all the time and even do it therapeutically when they are sick. As far as children, they should not be allowed to use any product with nicotine in it. If a kid is going to steal something with nicotine though they are not going to go for a plastic inhaler. They will go for a real cigarette because it is “cooler.” I mean no one worries kids are going to run around wearing nicotine patches!
For these reasons electric cigarettes should definitely be legal. They help people with a serious addiction wean themselves off of something that threatens their life. I hope they continue to be manufactured and sold for many years to come.
